Section 780.16 (a) Continued.

fisheries population, the only anticipated impact on the aquatic
communities at the Kerr Mine Area will be an increase in sediment
deposition between disturbed areas and sedimentation structures.
However, ae shown by recent studies conducted along the Illinois
and Canadian Rivers (1976), Britton (1979), Schroeder, et al.
(1979) and Propat (1980), there does not appear to be any correla-
tion between increased sediment deposition related to coal mining
and decreases in aquatic biota diversity.
Promo osAd' Plan fb"r" Miti:gatioci "df AdvAts@' Impact's' t"o" WtTdlffe Reri
Mine Area
Impacts on the wildlife resources on the Kerr Mine Area will be
minimized by designing and implementing the operations and subse-
quent reclamation plan to avoid, where practicable, disturbances to
wildlife habitat. For example, blasting will not be done during
early morning or late evening hours when wildlife is most active.
Similarly, off-road vehicle use on the permit area will be kept to
a minimum. Furthermore, appropriate positioning of fences will ex-
clude wildlife from active mining areas.
Where disturbance cannot be avoided, impacts to wildlife will be
minimized not only through proper positioning of haulroads, over-
burden stockpiles, topsoil stockpiles, sedimentation ponds, and
other mine support facilities, but also through implementation of
effective reclamation. In addition, throughout the mining opera-
tion Kerr Coal will attempt to keep the noise generated by mining
activities to a minimum by operation of the heavy equipment within
the pit as much as possible. Finally, as each stage of mining is
completed, Kerr Coal will undertake a thorough reclamation program
designed to return the affected land to its premining condition.
The approximate original contour of all disturbed areas will be re-
stored according to the techniques described in Section 816.102.
Restoration of the approximate original contour will re-establish
780-45
