2.04.7 <br />• ,RESPONSE continued <br />ietica, major cations and anions. nutrients, and trace elements. <br />Refer to Ezhibit CC (Exhibits Volume II) for analytical results. <br />General characteristics describe commonly recognized traits, ouch <br />as temperature, pH, etc. Major cations and anions are the most <br />prevalent constituents, generally constituting 90$ of all dissolved <br />matter in a stream. Nutrients are the constituents necessary to <br />sustain plant life. Trace elements are those constituents present <br />in very low levels. The samples were taken during annual flow, <br />just after anowmelt. The low suspended sediment content indi- <br />cates the flow at all the sites was from seepage instead of sur- <br />face runoff. There was no flow at S-2. The absence of am- <br />monia and sulfide and the positive Eh indicates an oudizing <br />environment. which means that the water has probably been in <br />the ground for a short time only. <br />• The general character of the water collected at that time is seen <br />on the Stiff diagrams of Figure 3, which show the balance and <br />distribution of anions and cations dissolved in the water. The <br />water at all sites but S-8 was found to be of a mixed sulfate <br />type, and S-8 was asodium-magnesium-sulfate type. <br />The nutrient levels found is the samples are not unusual for this <br />area. Chromium, unc, and molybdenum levels were all below <br />detection limits; only iron and manganese were in unusually high <br />concentrations. Manganese concentrations ezceed the National <br />Academy of Science (NAS) recommended drinking water concen- <br />trations-for every sample except from S-2 and S-8, and iron is <br />above the NAS recommended drinking water standards for sam- <br />ples from S-1. The SAR and conductivity values for the sample <br />from Station S-8 indicated that the water has a very high sodium <br />and salinity hazard index for use as irrigation water. <br />The water quality of Dowden Gulch is the least well documented. <br />• Unfortunately, there was no flow at S-2 when the one sample at <br />S-1 was taken.
