parallel to the bedding planes than normal to Chan. The VenneJo
Fonrretlon probably contains many small confined and sans-confined
sandstone units which may even be "perched" (lying above an unsaturated
zone). The formation is so complex, horizontally as we 11 as vertically,
that Identification and testing of Individual "aquifers" is impractical.
Data fran the slug tests performed on Monitoring Wells 10, 16 and
23 shay very low penneabllittes and tend to follav the type curve
pattern for confined aquifers. Since the perforated casing fn each well
spans several lithologic types, the resulting water level is likely a
composite plezametric head for the whole interval. The possible
plezometric surface shown on the Hydrology Map, sheet 3, should rot be
Interpreted as a water table surface shaving a northeast flow.
Monltoring~vell perforations occur In different zones within the VermeJo
Formation , separated by law-penneabil(ty shale units which should act
as confining layers. Movement of ground water will be discussed In the
next section.
r
Raton Formation - The Raton Formation consists of medium to
coarse-grained massive sandstone, less than 500 feet thick (b). In the
Permit Area, thickness If probably closer to 200 feet. The Ratan
Forretion and the overlying Poison Canyon sandstone occupy uplands In
the Permit Area.
Only one well Is knav to produce water from the Raton Formation,
t
and Its estimated yield Is 1 gallon per mirwte. This is the Corley 1~{'
'
r
We11, used for a fresh water supply to the Dorchester No. 1 Mine. S s~ '
Mlnirg activities In the VermeJo Formation are not expected Lo have any
Impact on the quantity or quality of ground water In the Raton
Formation.
Movement of Ground Water
. The regional gro~aid-water flow system within Lhe synclinal basin
contalning the Pernit Area Is not easily described, since maJor recharge
sources have been Intercepted for.nuilclpal supplies and the potential
