SIP.•LNAP.Y
The proposed Dorchester Lolomine Joint Venture Mine •is
located in the South Canyon City Coal Field in southern Fremont
County, Colorado. The minesite is situated on a gently eastwardly
sloping mesa at the eastern foot of the Wet Mountains.
Three bedrock formations outcrop in the lease area, the
•
Raton and Vermejo formations of Late Cretaceous age and the
Poison Canyon Formation of Tertiary age. All mining will take
place underground in the Pine Gulch and Red Arrow coal seaWs
of the Vermejo ormation. The lease area straddles the southern
terminus of the Chandler Syncline and is bounded on the west
by the Wet Mountain Fault.
Approximately 857. of the lease lies in the drainage of
Newlin Creek. Any flows in Newlin Creek are normally intercepter
by the City of Florence for their municipal water supply at a
point well above the lease tract. Flows now occur in Newlin Creek
only after heavy precipitation. The only surface facilities of
the proposed mine lie in a small basin tributary to Newlin Creek.
Mining is not expected to significantly affect either the q•,;antity
or quality of surface waters in the area.
The Vermejo formation contains sandstones, siltstones,
•

coals and highly lenticular sandstones. As a result of its ^ighl~•
varied stratigraphy, the overall permeability of this form:ion
is very low. Groundwater does occur in the Vermejo formaticz
and will-be encountered during LLining, however, the rate of
groundwater movement and recharge is very slow. It is expec=ed
that approximately 1 gpm of see;.age will be developed in t::e
mine for each acre mined underground. Mining is not expecte:
to significantl.; impa tt existing groundwater rights or the c~_al?t::
z_tiz
