• sandstone unit at rates proportional to their permeability The
dipping aquacludes-and aquitards in the recharge area
prevents the lateral development--of-a water table with a uniform
gradient. Water level measurements-made in cased holes and exploration
drilling records generally show a water table to be encountered
anywhere from 75 to 500 feet, depending upon the particular
strata penetrated.
Just north of the Joint Venture lease area lie the Corley,
Canyon Chief, Black Diamond, and Double Dick mines. These
mines, which extracted coal underground from seams overlying the Pine
Gulch are all interconnected and are now abandoned. At the time of
abandonment, the total pumpage from this complex was approximately
• 350,000 gallons per--day-ors sustained flow of 243 gpm. --Realizing
the considerable extent of the underground workings contributing
to this flow, this is equivalent to less than 1 gpm of production
per undergrcriad acre mined. Since abandonment, the water level
in the mines has slowly risen. Currently, the water level in tl-.e mines
stands at an elevation of approximately 6100 feet.
In general, the rate of groundwater movement in the lease
area is restricted by the low permeability of the Vei~ejo Formation and
the direction of migration is rigidly controlled by the Chandler
S~-ncline.
•
3-9
