, MINED~D WILDLIFE STATEMENT/EVALUATION (Revised)
for limited impact and select regular mine applications
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by Mined Land
Reclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
Las Animas County Gravel Pit (T33S, R621a'
Name/Type and Location of Mine (Le
Wildlife Species list:
Scaled quail
Pheasant
Cottontail rabbits
Jack rabbits
Occasional raptors
NW; Section 21;
and associated non-game species.
Endangered/critical species/impacted:
Occasional raptors feeding and perching in nearby trees.
Critical habitats/vegetative communities iropacied:
Choya cactus, rabbit brush, mid-grass prairie with associated fortis.
Bordered on south and west sides by mature elm trees.
Assessment of impact:
The only possible impact would stem from the activity of the pit preventing
raptors and other birds from nesting or perching in the surrounding trees.
I do not feel that any major impacts to wildlife will occur from the gravel
pit itself.
Hine Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for-which restoration
is designed).
The reclamation proposed by the county should enhance the area for wildlife
habitat. All brush removed during the operation should be piled along the
periphery of the pit for small mammal cover. lVe strongly request all trees
possible be left standing and not disturbed. These mature trees are valuable
nesting and roost sites for many species of birds.
Prepared By: Thomas J. Spezze, D.14.D1.
