-30-
• The forb stratum evidenced the highest production 569.3 1bs/acre or 69.88
of the total production; grasses contributed 245.8 lbs/acre production
(30.2$). Most of the identifiable forbs in production samples were weed
species including field bindweed, buckhorn plantain, Russian knapweed
(Centaurea repens) and romron bluemustard. As with other rover samples,
wheatgrass anti brome species were well represented in production sar~les.
Total percent moisture in production samples collected was 32.9% for
forbs and 36.48 for grasses.
The grassland reference area vas situated on a 2.2 acre site not to be dis-
turbed by future mining activities (Map entitled "Vegetation Types", Appen-
dix A). Only 10 species were encountered in cover quadrats and as a result,
the species diversity ittdex was low, 1.45.
Total Dover (vegetation plus bare ground plus litter-rock) for the grass-
land reference area was estimated at 75.38. Of this total, vegetation
. basal rover accounted for 14.98 while litter-rock and bare ground crnq~rised
20.68 and 39.88 of the total rover, respectively. 'lbtal grass and forb
basal cover on the site comprised 59.78 and 30.98 of the total vegetation
Dover, respectively. However, the grass cover was contributed by one
species, sand dropseed (Sporobolus cryptandrus). Stickseed (Iappula texana)
and scarlet globemallow (Sphaeralcea coccinea) were coRemn forbs in rover
quadrats accounting for 41.3 and 21.7% of the total forb cover, respectively.
Frequency values for these two species were 68.38 and 40.08, respectively.
Broom snakeweed (a sub-shrub). Basin big sagebrush (Artenisia tridentata)
and four wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) contributed m;n;mally to total
vegetation cover.
Total production on the grassland reference area was 682.6 1bs/acre. The
majority of the production was contributed by forbs which accounted for
548.1 lbs/acre or 80.38 of the total production. Tumbling hedgemustard
(Sisymbrium altissimim) accounted for 59.58 of the total forb production.
Broom snakeweed (66.4 lbs/acre) and rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus
• nausesus), (40.6 lbs/acre), were the next mast productive vegetative spe-
cies. Unidentified annual forbs rontributed 150.9 lbs/acre total dry
weight production. Pert?nt ;miatur? crntent vras 46.28 for grasses and
31.78 for forbs.
