-17- <br />• been encountered on or near the study area; 77 forb, 24 grass, 10 shrub, 8 <br />tree, 3sub-shrub, 5 grass-like, 3 succulent and 2 bryophyte species. Eight <br />of these are :listed as noxious weeds, one as a primary selenium indicator <br />and two as se~ndary absorbers of selenium. Soil samples were collected <br />at two sites supporting seleniwn indicator plant species to determine <br />the actual soil selenium content. No plants proposed for threatened or <br />endangered status were encrountered on the study area. <br />The majority of the herbaceous species in grassland and upland sagebrush <br />vegetation on the study area flower in early-late spring, produce mature <br />seeds ~' mid-late s~mTms and are largely vegetative in the fall. Areas <br />of high moisture (e.g., riparian) may sustain flowering over a longer <br />_ period. Many of the trees and shrubs present in the study area display <br />a similar phenology in that ripening fruits are produced by July. <br />NOXIOUS WEEDS <br />• The most recent listing of noxious weeds (State Noxious Weed Seed ~,~,,;re- <br />ments ReoocJnized in the Ac~ninistration of the Federal Seed Act, USDA, January, <br />1978) was consulted to determine whether any of the species listed in Appen- <br />dix Coccurred on the study area. The following noxious weeds were en- <br />ceuntered. <br />1. Agropyron repens - quackgrass <br />2. Cardaria pubescens -hairy whitetop <br />3. Centaurea repens - russian knapaeed <br />4. Cirsium arvense - Canada thistle <br />5. Chorispora tenella - ccvirron bluemustard <br />6. Conwlwlus arvensis -field bindweed <br />7. Plantago lanceolate - buckhorn plantain <br />8. Rtmex crispus -curly dock <br />Three of the above species, comron bluemustard, field bindweed and buckhorn <br />plantain, were represented in production samples from the grassland type on <br />• the affected area, while field bindweed and buakhorn plant~iin were also re- <br />presented in cover sarmles fr.~m phis type. AucL-horn plantain was the most. <br />mnmon of the three acmnntirn~ for 4.3°.
