-14-
• RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Those studies dealing with the entire study area, exclusive of individual
vegetation types are presented first. These include vegetation type
mapping and vegetation species composition. Baseline vegetation data
such as tree density and basal area, cover, frequency, productivity and
shrub heights gathered >n different vegetation types on Nucla Mine are
presented below. A description of the major vegetation parameters
measured and an evaluation of samq~ling adequacy concludes the report sec-
tion. Raw and analyzed data are provided on computer printouts in Appen-
dix B. Summary tables are utilized in the text where appropriate.
Weather wnditions within a given year, notably the amount and monthly
distribution of precipitation, can have a considerable effect on certain
vegetation parameters, especially productivity which, during unusually
• wet years, may increase dramatically. Therefore, in the interest of
qualifying the vegetative data base presented in the report for the
1979 growing season, precipitation data gathered at a nearby weather sta-
tion are included for the 1979 givwin4 season and for the six tronths
preceeding the 1979 growirxJ season (Table 2). Precipitation data for the
six month period prior to the growing season is important because the
amount and distribution of precipitation during this period influence
total soil moisture and thus, the amount of moisture available to plants
during the following growing season.
VDC;FTATIVE TYPE MAPPING
Delineation of vegetation types on the study area is depicted on Map 1,
("Vegetation Types"), Appendix A. Phe total acreages of each mapping unit
shown on Map 1 are surmiarized >n Table 3.
VEGETATION SPDCIES COMPOSPI'ION
~. A listing by life form of all vegetative species encountered on or near
the study area is presented in Apperrlix C. A total of 132 species have
