-11~
Revised O C T 3 0 19 81
species (i. e., species most wneronly encountered along shrub transects and in
• weer quadrats) and/or life form for each sample site on standard data forms.
SHRUB DENSITY
Density of shrubs in the upland sagebrush vegetation type was determined using
a belt transect method. All shrubs within a strip 95 x 5 m were wonted by
species and number per hectare determined. Twenty transects were surveyed in
the upland sagebrush affected area and 15 on the upland sagebrush wntrol site.
TREE DENSITY AND BASAL AREA DATA
Since tree wnmunities on the site were small and contained few trees, a
wmplete census technique arcs used to wllect density and basal area data
(basal area is the area of a plane passed through the Stan of a tree at
right angles to its longitudinal axis at breast height). This entailed
wonting all trees within the oommu~ity and rewrding circumference at
breast height (cbh) in centimeters for each. Since the areal extent of
• each oamcunity mould be obtained by polar planimetry techniques, number
of trees per unit area (i.e., trees/ac:re) was easily obtained. Likewise,
basal area was directly wnvertible f_~can cbh measurements.
VEGEPATION SPE;CIFS ITION
Rewnnaissance type surveys were conducted within each vegetation type on
all affected and wntrol areas to obtain a wmplete listing of vegetation
species for the study area. Surveys were wnducted by a plant taxonomist
during a minimum of two days each month throughout the growing season
(early May through August). A plant voucher collection was prepared for
all plant species identified during this study and has been submitted to
the Nucla Dline to be maintained on permanent file. As additional species
are verified, they will be added to the on-site plant wllection. For
each plant collected, date, habitat, elevation and associated species were
rewrded. Questionable plants were positively identified at the Rocky Mountain
Herbarium in Laramie, Wycming or at the U.S. Forest Service Herbarium in
Ft. Collins, Colorado. Taxonanic references wnsulted for plant identifica-
• tion purposes included Hitchwck, et al. (1959), Hitchwck and Chase (1971),
Harrington (1954) and Dorn (1977).
