CCC Rio Crande, Inc.-Red Rock Mine
Drought Management Plan
• Fosters the growth of soil microbial populations and humate
production, which in turn enhances soil aggregate formation;
Organic matter application rates typically will be based on slope gradients and lengths. Longer,
steeper slopes will typically receive higher application rates than shorter, flatter ones. Organic
matter applications will normally range between 20 and 30 tons per acre. Organic matter may or
may not be incorporated depending upon the nature of the application and the conditions of the
site where it is to be applied. Generally, a mix of fine and course grades of organic matter is
best for controlling erosion. Fine organic matter (passing through a 3/8-I/2 inch screen)
interfaces more effectively than lazger sized particles at the soil surface. Higher organic matter
content in the upper soil profile increases water infiltration and water holding capacity. In
addition, the fine organic matter is essential for rapid vegetation establishment and long-term soil
and plant health. The long-term nutrient value that organic matter supplies comes from the finer
portion. Coarse grades of organic matter (passing through a 2-3 inch screen) help prevent
splashing of raindrops directly on the soil surface and are less likely to be disturbed by rainfall
and storm runoff. The coarse grades also perform like filters by "stopping" or "catching" soil
particles already in motion. Table 1 provides general specifications for organic matter capable of
reducing erosion and enhancing plant growth.
Tabte 1.
