BANTA, Dlrsctor <br />DATE: March 16, 1988 <br />T0: Fred Banta <br />FROM: Michael Lone-~ <br />RE: PURGATORIE RIPER FISH KILL <br />On March 8, 1988 the Division was notified of a fish kill along the <br />Purgatorie River. The kill area was immediately downstream from the <br />Golden Eagle mine discharge point. Division of Wild Life and Dept. <br />of Health Personnel had been at the site prior to our notification <br />collecting water and fish samples. DOW had been notified of a <br />possible fish kill at the site on Saturday afternoon, March 4, 1988. <br />Samples are being analyzed at this time by the DON and the EPA. The <br />EPA is performing bioassay tests. <br />Division personnel inspected the site on Friday and Saturday, March <br />it and 12, 1988. At this time we are gathering info rnlation to <br />determine what appropriate enforcement section, if any, should be <br />taken. We are coordinating our efforts with the DOW and DOH in <br />order to determine the appropriate action for each agency. We want <br />to avoid duplication if possible. We hope to set a meeting for this <br />week with all agencies involved to coordinate our efforts.
