• To further examine the similarity of vegetation of the Permit and Expansion Areas, the Motyka Index of
Similarity (Moryka et al. 1950) was applied to the 1990 cover data. This formula is expressed as:
2w
ISmo = x 100
a + b
where,
w =sum of the lesser values in common between area A and area B
a =sum of the values of area A
b =sum of the values for area B
Similarity indices were calculated using cover data by lifeform and total vegetation cover.
Results of calculation of the Motyka Index were as follows:
Western Wheatgrass /Alkali Sagebrush (Expansion/Permit Areas)
• Component
Native Annual 8 Biennial Forbs
Introduced Annual & Biennial Forbs
Native Perennial Forbs
Introduced Perennial Forbs
Native Perennial Graminoids
Introduced Perennial Graminoids
Shrubs
Trees
Succulents
Total Vegetation Cover
Expansion Area Value
Permit Area Value
0.7
0.0
12.9
0.1
26.1
0.0
8.4
0.0
0.0
48.3
TOTAL 96.5
w = 0.4+0.0+12.9+0.0+19.6+0.0+8.4+0.0+0.0+48.3 = 89.6
2 (89.6)
ISmo x 100 = 83.7 percent
96.5 + 117.6
C~
30
0.4
0.0
26.4
0.0
19.6
0.0
12.4
0.0
0.0
58.8
117.6
