Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
• • -iii iiiiiiiiiiiii iii
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTO N, Director
DATE: June 19, 1985
T0: Sue Mowry
FROM: Randall Price
RE: Annual Alluvial Report From Bear Coal Co. - File No. C-033-81
I have reviewed the 1984 Annual Alluvial Well Report for the Bear Coal
Company. This mine is required to submit an annual report as agreed upon in
stipulation no. 5. The report is to contain data from monthly monitoring of 3
alluvial wells adjacent to the North Fork of the Gunnison river and around the
site of the surface facilities. In addition to monthly monitoring of field
parameters, quarterly sampling and analysis of agreed upon parameters are
required. Upon reviewing this report I have the following comments.
1) the first two quarters of sampling do not have a sampling date and the
last two quarters analysis dates show that the samples were stored for 114
days and 40 days for the third and fourth quarter respectively. The
storage times for these samples exceeded the maximum storage time for 10
of the tested parameters. The data for these parameters may be inaccurate
due to degradation over time.
2) The high concentration of Aluminum in the well samples may be an
indication of aground water problem; or may be due to absent or
inadequate filtration. Bear should review their monitoring and analysis
procedure to determine the cause of these anomalies.
3) In addition to the ground water monitoring report, Bear Coal is required
in stipulation no. 4 to monitor outflow from the mine and water usage
within the mine. Bear Coal, in the "Annual Alluvial Well Report",
reported that there were outflows from the mine, but Bear did not address
the water usage within the mine.
Bear is required in stipulation no. 6 to submit an annual hydrologic
report. The stipulation reads:
THE PERMITTEE WILL SUBMIT TO THE DIVISION AN ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT.
THIS REPORT SHALL INCLUDE AN ANALYSIS OF ALL HYDROLOGIC DATA GATHERED
DURING THE YEAR, AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACTS OF MINING DURING THE YEAR,
AND AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECTED IMPACTS OF MINING IN THE FOLLOWING
YEAR. THIS REPORT SHALL ASSESS THE IMPACT OF MINING ON THE QUALITY AND
QUANTITY OF WATER IN SURFACE STREAMS, SPRINGS, GROUND WATER AQUIFERS, MINE
INFLOW, AND MINE DISCHARGES.
Bear has not submitted this information as of this date.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
