iiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiii
•
~~ 2.04.11 FISH AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES INFORMATION
Doc Date:12111/2001
Several wildlife species are found in the Southfield mine and loadout
areas. Site specific wildlife information for the Southfield permit area
was provided by Mr. Jack Vayhinger, Wildlife Biologist for the Colorado
Division of Wildlife, during Dorchester's initial permitting effort in
1919 and 1980. This information is provided in Exhibit 12, Wildlife
Information.
Mr. Vayhinger's wildlife investigations identified all species of wildlife
known to occur in the general area of the Southfield mine and loadout
facilities. A complete list of the species identified is presented as
Table 29, Wildlife Species Occurring or Likely to Occur in Mine and
Loadout Areas.
None of the wildlife species identified are listed on the Federal or State
• threatened or endangered species list, although there is a possibility
that the Perigrine Falcon may migrate. through the general area. Mr.
Vayhinger indicated that no significant impacts on migration of the
Perigrine Falcon are anticipated as a result of mining and related
operations conducted at the Southfield mine and loadout facilities.
Some displacement of species utilizing affected areas, to adjacent
undisturbed habitats may occur. However, Mr. Vayhinger stated that
adjacent wildlife habitat has sufficient excess carrying capacity to
absorb displaced individuals without reductions in wildlife populations.
The summary of wildlife investigations recommended fencing the county road
between the mine site and State Highway 67 in the event that deer-vehicle
accidents along this county road become significant. Recent discussions
with Southfield Mine personnel indicate that few if any accidents
involving wildlife along the county road leading from the mine site to
State Highway 61 have occurred during the past ten (10) years. Therefore
• EFCI has determined that fencing of this stretch of road is unnecessary
and would not mitigate impacts to wildlife or human health and safety.
2.04.11-1
