r
RECLAMATION SUGGESTIONS
• Existing topsoil material , 0-24 inches, should be stockpiled. After gravel
extraction has taken place, the remaining pit area should be banksloped to
4:1 or flatter where possible, and the stockpiled topsoil replaced on the
areas that will be above water table level. Revegetation will require at
least a twelve inch depth plant growth media for satisfactory reestablishment,
Suggested Vegetative Cover:
For 4:1 bankslopes with south and east exposure, a mixture of 40% Western
wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii, variety Barton) , 30/ Switchgrass (Panicum
virgatum, variety Grenville) and 30% Alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides,
variety: seed source from within 150 miles of planting site) may be used.
Recommended seeding rates: 40 pure live seed (PLS) per square foot.
Rates arc for use with a grass drill - double for broadcast seeding.
western wheatgrass, variety Barton 40% = 6.4 lbs. PLS/Acre .
Switchgrass, variety Grenville 30% = 1.35 lbs. PLS/Acre
Alkali sacaton 30% = 0.30 lbs. PLS/Acre
TOTAL 8.05 lbs. PLS/Acre
These grasses, when established, will provide excellent wildlife habitat for
nesting and brood cover, -
Slopes at 3: 1 should be mulched after seeding to reduce water and wind erosion
before the area is protected by the seeded vegetative cover. An effective
mulch of clean straw (grass, hay or cereal grain) applied at a rate of 4,000
pounds per acre, will provide 92 percent of coverage for the soil surface.
This will increase soil moisture and reduce the surface temperature to protect
^_rmiccting seeds and seedlings. The straw should be crimped into the soil
to prevent it from blowing and washing away. Other acceptable mulch materials
are excelsior matting, jute netting and erosion control fabric. -...
SEEDING DATES: All seedings should be made in the spring, if possible, to
take advantage of the best moisture period. Recommended dates are between rpmi
March 15th and May 15th, Late fall seeding can be made after October 15th.
Germination will not take place until the following spring.
SEEDING EQUIPMENT: A grass drill with depth bands should be used. This will
insure a better seed germination and survival rate. Broadcast seeding is
acceptable but not recommended.
Fiy®:
Y
fiw"urwr^,d"'ati"rvt,x-7 e
