6. Method of Seeding
• Drills
I
Proper seeding equipment should be used on critical areas. If native
grasses are recommended, a grass drill should also be recommended. The
drill should be equipped with a satisfactory feeding mechanism, agitator,
double disk furrow openers and packer wheels. Depending upon the seeding
recommendation, it may be necessary to have separate boxes for fluffy
grasses, small seeded grasses and for legumes.
Hydraulic Equipment
II
This is an acceptable method but should ordinarily be restricted to areas I
inaccessible to drills. If hydromulch is to be applied, the seed should
be applied in a separate operation prior to mulching. The exception to
this will be irrigated areas.
WM
i
Hand Application
Broadcast seeding by hand or a manually operated seeder is acceptable on
small area and areas not accessible to drills. Seed will be covered 1/4"
to 1/2" deep by raking or harrowing.
7. Selection of species • ki.;::e,;j
A. Attached are seven lists of grasses and legumes and a list of adapted
woody plants. These have been prepared by Land Resource Areas (LRA) . I
Some LRA's have been grouped for the purpose of simplifying seeding
recommendations. !
i
B. Select adapted grasses and legumes from the appropriate attachment .
B. Time of seeding,
t
Date of seeding will be at the discretion of Field Office personnel.
Generally, seeding will be made immediately prior to anticipated periods
df precipitation, or during late fall or early winter so that germination
will occur in the spring. Seeding will not be done if the soil is frozen. i
9. Rate of seeding
See Standard and Specifications for "Seeding Rates"
10. Protection
Critical areas must be protected from people, livestock and vehicles until
areas are stabilized . Also, it may be necessary to limit or control future
use indefinitely.
'rwssa
. Page 3 of 3 j
