• III IIIIIII17
IIIIIIIII
September 18 , 1978
SEP 2 7 i978
Mine Land Reclamation Bureau
1313 Sherman Street f•A!?-ED L^eiD rl,-OLF.i'rlAll0i
Denver , Colorado 80631
Gentlemen :
My wife has just finished a letter regarding the Bestway
Paving Company ' s application for a permit to mine gravel
at Fourth Street and 35th Avenue in Greeley , Colorado.
I want to add my objections to her letter .
When petitions were circulated earlier at the time this
matter came to the attention of the neighborhood, 810 of
the residents within 500 feet were in opposition of that
gravel pit . It is the belief of the neighborhood that
a great deal of political pressure was applied at the county
level to get the zoning changed and our neighborhood is
extremely unhappy about that . However , we are confident
now that it is out of the hands of the local political
arena that we can get a fair hearing in the matter and
at least a clarification of the reclamation plan and the
mining operation.
I am confident that your department is sufficiently alert
to observe the differences in information in the original
plan and the one which is now being proposed, and the
inadequacy of the information which has been furnished in
the plan regarding dust pollution , noise, traffic , shifting
of the ground, to say nothing regarding the quality of the
gravel. Our presentation at the Commissioners hearing
as to geological data available fell on deaf ears . We trust
that you have made studies (unbiased) to be sure there is
high quality gravel on the site as Bestway claims . Our
neighborhood is very doubtful of the quality of that gravel ,
as we live close by and believe it is inferior and will be
used only as a base for roads and that Bestway will continue
to purchase the gravel they need for asphalt from Greeley
Sand and Gravel as they have been doing for years .
Please consider ALL of the possibilities in this application
and conduct the necessary research to be CERTAIN of the
facts before acting .
Sincerely,
Donald Ragan /
405 35th Avenue Court
Greeley, Colorado
