DIVIJiUIV OF MINES
Colorado Division of Mines
Department of Natural Resources
1845 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Gentlemen:
We are submitting an application for a permit to operate open mining for
our operation located South and West of Fountain, Colorado, which the
Schmidt Construction, Inc. have operated since 1967. When we originally
opened up the gravel mining operation there were no regulations or zoning
requiring special permit for this type of operation since gravel mining
was an approved use of the land,
We have recently got approval of the E1 Paso County Commissioners for this
mining operation and have submitted our reclamation plan, maps and information
required.
In addition to the information submitted, we submit the following which is
required in Section 13 of your application form and not clearly shown on
our maps:
Section 13 Par. h - The topsoil generally averages from 2-5 feet
in thickness except in the eroded arroyo areas.
Section 13 Par i - The present vegetation is sparse grass, yucca
and cactus which is due to the arid conditionof this mesa.
Section 13 Par. j - The gravel formation varies from 15' to 30' in
depth and will average 21 feet according to our test drillings.
Section 13 Par. k - The physical appearance of the area will be quite
similar as now exists except in those areas which now show arroyos
created by erosion of the topsoil and gravels. The bottom of the
gravel formation is generally flat with a gentle slope from North to
South.
