Regulatory action cottcernin~;
• this permit has been delayed pending the results of the technical evaluation
to be done by MSE3A and also a comprehensive review of tfte relationship betweL•n
Sediment Control at the east mine bench, the Wash Plant as well as the Slurry
System.
As you may know, the Slurry Disposal is to commence not in the east mine~but
in the west mine which at the current time is inactive. L;estern Slope Cark.~.~i
feels that since Slurry Disposal is at this time an experimental practice~tTrat
they do not wish to jeopardize their active mining operation or production
schedules. Therefore, the sumps in the east mine which are connected to the
Sediment Control System for the east mine bench will not be utilized for the
first several years in the Slurry Disposal System. P.ather, the plan is to
introduce the slurry to the lo:+er-most northern section of the west mi.^.e in
the area of the main slope. The main slope consists of five tunnels which
proceed doom dip _.. from the Hawks Nest west entry approximately 4,100 feet co
the northern most extension of the mine. Cross cuts connect the five entrie>
every 70 to 80 feet. If the mine is currently open at the lower most section
existing pillars will be shaved so that tnaSiatum coal recovery is achieved,
then the slurry will be introduced into the voids around each entry. Since a
substantial amount of the roof support will be lost as t:tis coal recove*y
operation takes place, there is a high likelihood that the sump which is shaman
on Exhibit F of the slurry proposal till not be utilized. Instead, water m:ty
have to be drawn from the slurry at approximately the see point. that it is
