Ponds will be constructed by using a combination of excavating and berming. Outside
slopes will be 3:1, and inside slopes will be 2:1. The anticipated berm height will be 10
feet.
D.2.5 Pipeline
The project will require a product pipeline and a return water pipeline connecting the
Piceance and Parachute Sites. The two pipelines will be 44 miles long, will be like-
constructed, and will be buried in the same trench. The pipelines will be routed parallel
to existing pipeline corridors for approximately 33 miles. There is no existing corridor
nearby for miles 0 through 7 across the Piceance Site and up Hatch Gulch or for miles 32
through 35 where the pipeline descends Davis Point.
Installation of the pipeline will require a maximum 125-foot-wide construction right-of-
way and will disturb approximately 667 acres over the 44-mile-long corridor. A 50-foot-
wide permanent easement would occupy approximately 267 acres in the long term. For
the purposes of this 112 Reclamation Permit Application, it is assumed that all of the
right-of-way will be new surface disturbance. However, up to 25 feet of the
construction right-of-way may overlap existing pipeline corridors in certain locations.
Although the pipeline will not be regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation
(DOT), it will be designed, constructed, and installed in accordance with construction
specifications that meet or exceed DOT standards.
Within the construction right-of-way, trees and shrubs will be cleared across the entire
corridor to accommodate pipeline construction activities. In areas without substantial
tree and shrub growth, vegetation disturbance, other than that from the actual
excavation of the pipeline trench, will be limited to that resulting from the movement of
construction machinery and from placement/replacement of excavated materials.
The pipeline trench will generally be excavated with a standard backhoe. Specialized
equipment such as rock trenchers and wheel trenchers would be used where conditions
warrant. It is not anticipated that blasting would be necessary. The pipeline trench will
be 72 to 80 inches wide and 54 to 60 inches deep. Where present to a depth that allows
for stockpiling (greater than 6 inches), topsoil will be segregated and stored along the
pipeline. Soil will be backfilled promptly into the trench following pipeline installation.
There will be 6 inches of bedding under the pipe, 12 to 24 inches of subsoil, and 30 to 36
inches of topsoil and/or subsoil, as available, above the pipe.
There will be four road crossings that will require boring: Rio Blanco County Road 5 at
the two crossings of Piceance Creek, the road up Collins Gulch, and Garfield County
Road 215 paralleling Parachute Creek. At each road crossing, the pipeline would be
buried 4 feet deep, in accordance with DOT specifications. The product and return
D-8
