can be transported via the product pipeline to the Parachute Site. Final processing will
occur at the Parachute Site.
D.2 Project Component Descriptions and Earthmoving Requirements
The nahcolite solution mining process itself does not involve earthmoving. However,
earthmoving will be required for construction of drill pads, well field piping, surface
structures and facilities, ponds, pipelines, utilities, access roads, and other project
components.
D.2.1 Drill Pads
Each solution mining well will require a drill pad for the drill rig and other drilling
equipment. The drill pad will be a leveled area with approximate dimensions of 150
feet by 80 feet (0.28 acre). After an access road is constructed for a well, vegetation
would be cleared, and topsoil will be removed and stockpiled within the drill pad area.
Topsoil would be reused in the future for final reclamation of the well field. A track
exca•: ator (bulldozer, track hoe) will be used to do the initial surface work, and a grader
will be used to do the final surface leveling of the drill pad. Standard cut and fill
techniques will be used in construction of each drill pad.
Approximately 453 wells will be mined during the first 30 years of operations. They
will be located within the six 5-year mining panels, which cover approximately 1,030
acres of the 4,084-acre Piceance Site. Approximately 76 of these wells will be located in
the 0-5 year mining panel, which covers an area of approximately 160 acres. A
preliminary well layout plan for the 0-5 year mining panel is shown in Figure D-3. The
disturbed area for drill pads in the 0-5 year panel is included in Table D-1, which
outlines total disturbance for each panel.
Drill pads will not be constructed at the Parachute Site or along the pipeline route
because solution mining is limited to the Piceance Site.
D.2.2 Well Field Piping
Well field piping will consist of three types of piping: main header piping, lateral
piping, and individual well piping. The main header system will cross each 5-year
mining panel and will feed the initial processing plant, as shown in Figure D-3. The
main header pipe racks will be located along the main well field access road for each
mining panel. Off the main header system, a series of lateral pipe systems will be
routed into different areas of the well field to connect to the individual well piping.
Individual piping will be connected to each well head.
The main header and lateral systems will require a cleared corridor width of 10 feet and
an additional 10 feet of corridor for construction. The individual well piping will
D-3
