surface water runoff will be diverted around them and back to their respective natural
drainages. Best Management Practices (BMPs) will be employed to minimize soil
erosion and sedimentation (see Reclamation Plan, Exhibit E).
D.4 Size of Mining Area
The mining area is depicted in Figure D-2, which shows the Piceance Site and the 30-
year mining areas (six 5-year mining panels). The total area of the Piceance Site within
the Yankee Gulch Leases is 4,084 acres. Of this area, 1,030 acres are within the areas to
be mined in the first 30 years. Well spacing within panels will be approximately 300
feet, and about 453 wells are expected to be developed in the first 30 years.
At times, two of the 5-year mining panels outlined in Figure D-2 will be under
development at the same time. For instance, as development of the 0-5 year mining
panel approaches completion, development of the 5-10 year mining panel will
commence so that there will always be sufficient solution mining wells in production to
feed the processing plants. Reclamation of the 0-5 year panel will begin at
approximately the same time that development of the 5-10 year mining panel begins.
Therefore, at any one time the total disturbed area in the well field will roughly
approximate the disturbance within one of the mining panels, i.e., from approximately
59 to 98 acres. After the first 5 years of mining, additional previously disturbed areas
will be in various stages of reclamation and revegetation.
The size of each of the panels and their respective anticipated surface disturbances are
given below. The disturbed surface areas listed below include disturbance for drill
pads, well piping, pumping stations, and access roads.
Table D-1 Disturbed Area for Mining Panels.
Mining Panel
Year Panel Area
(acres) Temporary
Construction
Disturbance (acres) 5-year Disturbance
(acres)
0 to 5 160 34 75
5 to 10 209 44 98
10 to 15 172 37 81
15 to 20 167 35 78
20 to 25 125 27 59
25 to 30 197 42 92
Total 1,030 219 483
D.5 Mining and Reclamation Timetable
In general, the well field development sequence is based on the concept of two-pass
mining. On the first pass, every other well will be developed to its maximum size. On
D-13
