The moisture control section is dry for extended periods between average
maximums in most years.
Depth to calcic horizon: 5 to 24 inches.
Soil Temperature: 49 to 59 degrees F.
Clay averages 18 to 35 percent in the particle-size control section.
Rock fragments: 0 to 15 percent weighted average.
Soil Reaction: Slightly to moderately alkaline. In Utah reaction ranges to strongly alkaline.
A horizon
Hue: 2.SYR to lOYR
Value: 5 to 7 dry, 3 to 6 moist
Chroma: 2 to 6
Texture: Sandy loam, gravelly sandy loam, fine sandy loam, channery fine sandy loam, very fine
sandy loam, loam, or gravelly loam.
Bw horizon (where present)
Hue: SYR, 7.SYR, or lOYR
Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist
Chroma: 2 to 4
Texture: fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam
Bk horizon
Hue: 2.5YR to lOYR
Value: 5 to 8 dry, 4 [0 7 moist
Chroma: 0 to 6
Texture: Sandy loam, fine sandy loam, loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 40 percent
In some pedons textures of gravelly sandy loam or gravelly sandy clay loam occur.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Abracon (UT), Cltugcity (T WY), Cobbra (T UT), and
Xet~mack (T NM) series. Similar soils are the Creel (NM), DarveV (NM), Hernandez (NM) series.
Abracon soils have soil moisture control section that is moist periodically for short periods
throughout the year. Chugcity and Xenmack soils have bedrock between 20 and 40 inches of the
surface. Cobbra soils have more than 35 percent rock fragments below 40 inches. Creel, Darvey and
Hernandez soils are in the fine-loamy family. in addition, Creel soils have a lithic or paralithic
contact at depths of less
than 40 inches, Dazvey soils have calcic horizons greater than 24 inches deep, and Hernandez soils
are moist for longer periods during the winter and for fewer periods of time during the spring and
summer.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Harvey soils are on hills, swales, plateaus, bajadas and mesas. Slope
gradients range from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual precipitation typically ranges from 10 to 13
httpa/wwwstatlab.instate.edu/cgi-bin/osdlosdname.cgi?-P 3/15/2002
