£or limited impact and select regular mine applications
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for
use by Mined Land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a
mining permit for:
DaVi.c Pi h ~ f;r+~n 4anA ~, f:ravol Pi+. ~ T99R RddW Aor~_ 1Q
Name/Type and Location of Mine (Legal)
Wildlife Species List:
Mule Deer Very Numerous Waterfowl Raptors
White-tailed Deer Prairie Dog Various Nongame
Pheasant Burrowing Owl Bird, Mammal,
Rabbit Coyote d. Reptile Spp.
Morning Dove Red Fox
Endangered/Critical Species/Impacted:
There are no Threathened or Endangered Species that we are aware of at this site.
However, there are Prairie Dogs on site and several Burrowing Owls were observed.
Critical Habitats/Vegetative Communities Impacted:
This site is a typical short grass pasture that is being grazed. There is an
active Prairie Dog colony on site. In addition it is immediately adjacent to
a large pond which winters large numbers of waterfowl.
Assessment of Impact:
Mining of this site will obviously displace many, if not all,of the prairie dogs
and associated species. Mining activity during the winter months could prevent
large numbers of waterfowl from using the adjacent pond as a wintering site.
Serious contamination could occur if oils and fuels from machinery were to find
there way into the pond.
Mine Reclamation Recommendations (include key species/habitats for
which restoration is designed):
I recommend that all mining and reclamation activities should maintain a minimum
setback of 200 feet from the edge of the pond. This should include construction
5, use of any perimeter roads, stockpiling of overburden or gravel material, S
especially storage of heavy equipment ~ associated fuel, oil, and maintenance S
storage buildings. The site should be reseeded with native grass species approved
by the Natural Resource Conservation Service. The planting of shrubs like Wild Plum,
Buffaloberry, Chokecherry, Wild Rose, & Sandhill Cherry would not only provide food
S shelter for wildlife, but also improve the esthetics of the area. The planting of
trees or construction of small grazing exclosures to promote natural reseeding
of local cottonwoods would benefit birds, especially raptors which could then prey
on any prairie dmmogs in the area. .
Prepared By: ((J~,kyi7 ~~/~ Date: S ~ O~
Submitted By:
Date:
This statement is void if not processed within 1 year.
This analysis does not constitute approval of application.
