2.2 SURFACE FACILITIES
• Initial earthwork involved the construction and improvement of and access road to the coal
outcrop (8.26 acres) and the excavation of a bench for an exploratory mining operation (2.69
acres). These existing features along with operational facilities are shown on Figure 2.2-4.
As noted in Section 2.1, the bench was excavated to only the size necessary for it's intended
purpose, an access road was provided along a hillside, above and adjacent to an ephemeral
drainage wide enough for the desired road use, approximately 30 feet. A diversion ditch and a
MSHA required berm are included along the upper stretches of the road. Some fill was used
along the road to minimize the width of the cut and the gradient of the access road. All
excavation was conducted to create the most moderate slope and grade possible.
A general description of existing and proposed facilities within this work area is provided in
Section 2.1, with specific information contained in the following subsection. Anticipated
construction and completion dates for all proposed facilities is shown on Table 2.2-1. Disturbed
and proposed disturbed land along with affected and proposed affected lands is shown on Figure
2.2-1. Proposed facilities and existing facilities are shown on Figures 2.2-4 and 2.2-2.
2.2-1 BuildinQS and Other Structures
• Figure 2.2-4 shows the location of existing buildings and structures on the mine bench these
structures were used to support the exploration operations and will be replaced or relocated as
shown on Figure 2.2-2 for the expanded .operations. These buildings and structures are as
follows:
Mine office
Vehicle storage
Primary mine fan
Bulk rock dust storage
Power distribution equipment and Power line
Conveyor gantry
Crushing unit
The remaining area will be used for coal and materials storage (see Section 2.2-4). As noted
above, the trailer facilities will be replaced by a permanent mine office building and a vehicle
storage/ warehouse building. The mine office will be a two story, fabricated steel building, 16
feet wide by 60 feet long and will be 20 feet high. The office will be constructed on the concrete
foundation and slab. The vehicle storage /warehouse building is to be a single story structure,
also of steel construction, and is to be 20 feet wide by 80 feet long, built on a concrete foundation
. and slab. These buildings will comply with state and local codes.
M° Page 2.2 - 1 10-13-00
