0.V
projections, and split seafn areas not presently considered recoverable will reduce ove~recovery to
. approximately 50 Pf the minable in place coal.
2.1.6 Subsidence
The existing and projected development entries have been designed for use as primary access
throughout projected life of mine. For this reason, care has been taken to design an entry
configuration which will provide long-term stability. Present development entry design allows 60%
of the area to remain in place as pillars. Convergence data and observation of rib stability to date
have shown no abnormal movement in the mine. The existing and projected entries addressed in
this permit term (5 years) are development only, with no secondary mining methods proposed. This
will eliminate the possibility of subsidence; therefore, no subsidence monitoring is being planned for
this permit term.
Also, no structures or renewable resource lands exist within the proposed permit and adjacent
areas as can be clearly seen in the evaluation of information contained in this application and
supporting data. The definition of "renewable resource lands" as contained in 30 CFR 701.5 was
applied in this inventory; this includes the fact that there is no aquifer above the coal seams to be
mined.
2.1.7 Protection of Other Resources
No known resources such as oil, gas or other minerals exist on the portion of the Permit Area
planned for mining or within the mine plan area as shown on Figures 2.1-4 and 2.1-5. The Douglas
Pass area contains two known oil and gas containing geologic structures, or producing oil and gas
areas, the Coal Gulch and South Canyon Fields. There is no indication of structural traps in the area
of this proposed operation.
The permit area is included in the Mesa-Gar Federal Oil and Gas Unit. This unit calls for a
multiple well program to explore for stratigraphically controlled Dakota sandstone gas production.
A well drilled in 1974, three miles north of the Permit Area recovered water from the Dakota and
was abandoned at a total depth of 5,545 feet in the Entrada formation. This well is the C and W
Drilling Co., #1 Hitchborn Livestock NE SE Section 9, T7S, R102W. The Mesa-Gar Unit #lA Well
drilled 1253 FSL 2120 FEL, Section 30, T7S, R ] Ol W was abandoned after drilling into the Dakota
at 5,175 feet. This well is two and one-half miles east of the Permit Are.
Two other dry holes were drilled and tested through the Dakota formation in 1980. They are the
. Mesa-Gar Federal 28-1 and the Ed Young 6-4. The Mesa-Gar Federal 28-1 is located 2346 FWL
2429 FSL, Section 28, T7S, R102W, and was drilled•to~3,057'. The Ed Young 6-4 located 1956 FSL
M~ Page 2. I - 7 10-12-00
