stockpiled and revegetated to minimize any erosion until it is used in final reclamation. Stockpile
locations are shown in Figure 2.2-1. Provisions for topsoil management are discussed in Section 2.4.
Existing facilities on the mine bench include a conveyor gantry and a small, temporary mine
ventilation fan. The locations of existing facilities are shown in Figure 2.2-4. When the bench
configuration is complete a crusher, bulk rock dust tank as well as mine office and vehicle storage
building will be constructed. The existing equipment will be relocated as shown in figure 2.2-2.
2.1.1 Type and Method of Mining
GVC plans to mine portions of the Cameo and Carbonera coal seams as shown in the mine plans
on Figures 2.1-4 and 2.1-5. These figures identify the sequence of mining for the first five years
individually and in five year increments afterwards. Development projections for the first five years
are shown in Figures 2.1-I and 2.1-2. The initial permit area is based upon the mining projections
for these first five years. All mining will be done by continuous miners, with diesel haulage vehicles
and conveyor belts used to transport the coal to the surface. A room and pillar, retreat slicing
method of mining will be used with no longwall mining planned at this time.
Cameo Seam Development
• The lower split of the Cameo seam has been accessed from a bench at the coal seam outcrop.
Exploration development entries have been driven approximately 2500 feet in the lower split
utilizing afive-entry system. These entries were driven 1600 feet southeast then fumed due east and
driven a distance of 900 feet, see Figure 2.1-1. They will then be driven a distance of about 2200
feet east to the lease barrier pillar. From the point where the developed main entries change
direction ,main entries will also be driven due south approximately 13,200 feet to the lease barrier
pillar. At a distance of 6,500 feet south, entries will be developed west to the coal outcrop and east
to the lease barrier pillar.
Carbonera Seam Development
Access to the Carbonera seam will be gained by driving rock slopes to the south at the eastern
extreme of the Cameo Seam main entries, as shown on Figure 2.1-2. From the point where the rock
slopes intersect the Carbonera seam, entries will be driven west approximately 3,000 feet. These
will then be turned south, superimposed on the Cameo seam main entries, and extended until the
minimum mining height of five feet is reached. The west entries will also be continued to the coal
outcrop. At a distance 5,000 feet south, mains will be developed east to the lease barrier pillar.
• These will also be superimposed on the Cameo seam main entries.
Nl~ Page 2.1 - 3 10-12-00
