SHELTON, Dlrsetor
March 25, 1987
Craig Springer
Bear Coal Company
P.O. Box 518
Somerset, Colorado 81434
Re: Review of Bear Coal Annual Hydrologic Report
Dear Mr. Springer:
Q Q
The Division had completed its review of Bear Coal Company's Annual Hydrologic
Report. Analysis of the data contained in the report indicates that no
degradation of surface or ground water resources has occurred as a result of
mining at the Bear Mine. The report indicates that Bear discharged from its
sediment pond on June 27, 1986. The effluent discharged at this time was
within NPDES permit effluent limits. Review of alluvial ground water field
parameter data indicates that all measurements were within historically
recorded ranges, with the exception of an electroconductivity value recorded
for Well AA-1 on July 24, 1986. This value is probably anomalous and perhaps
due to an error in data acquisition. Amore thorough study at the site may be
required if the elevated electroconductivity measurements continue,
The Annual Hydrologic Report is complete. Analysis of the data indicates that
the Bear Coal Company operation has not resulted in any degradation of surface
or ground water resources.
If you have any questions, feel free to call me.
'"~ Sincerely,
Brent Anderson
Reclamation Specialist
BAjsak
8411E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman St
366
i
