Colorado 80203
pivision or minerals ~ Geology
Re: Twentymile Coal Company - Foidel Creek Mine: Permit No. C-82-056, Second
Quarter, 1997 Sedimentation Pond Inspections
Dear Mr. Hernandez;
Sediment Pond inspection reports were not completed for the sediment ponds associated
with Permit No. C-82-056 for the second quarter of 1997. Twentymile Coal Company
(TCC) feels that the requirements of Rule 4.05.6(13) were met for the second quarter;
however. the report forms were not completed due to an oversight.
The ponds associated with Permit No. C-82-056 are visited on a weekly basis to collect
samples as required by NPDES permits CO-0027154, CO-0036684, and CO-0042161.
Visual inspections with regard to any structural problems, erosion, or hazardous
conditions would be noted and repairs scheduled for the pond, if necessary. A registered
professional engineer, experienced in the construction of sedimentation ponds, visited
each of the ponds associated with Permit No. C-82-056 at least ]0 times during the
second quarter.
In addition to the NPDES sample collection, weekly inspections of Pond G are conducted
to comply with the requirements of 30 CFR 77.216-3. These inspection forms are kept
on file at the TCC Environmental Department offices.
A partial Coal Inspection was performed on April 23, 1997 by Dan Hernandez and Byron
Walker with Tavis Rogers. Karl Koehler, and Rick Mills as representatives for TCC.
Maintenance issues noted with respect to the sediment ponds were: erosion at the inlet of
Pond F, silt fence maintenance below Pond D, and [hat the V-notch weir had not been re-
set at Pond F. Ponds F and D are covered under Permit C-8]-071 and the maintenance
issues pointed out in the April inspection have either been completed, or will be
completed. A complete Coal Inspection was performed on June 6, 1997 by Janet Binns
with Tavis Rogers as the representative of TCC. No problems were noted with regard to
the ponds during this inspection.
