control erosion. From the standpoint of ground cover, the erosion potential
of successfully revegetated mined land should not exceed the rate of
geological erosion found on adjacent natural areas.
FIELD TRIALS
The soil stabilization procedures, species mixtures, planting and
seeding times proposed in this permit application are identical to those
utilized on other areas reclaimed by CYCC. Since the nearby test plots have
been thoroughly evaluated and the reclamation practices adjusted
accordingly, Colorado Yampa Coal Company does not intend to conduct field
trials.
GRAZING MANAGEMENT
Colorado Yampa Coal Company may graze some of the reclaimed parcels
prior to bond release to promote the utilization of the areas as rangeland
and pastureland. The reclaimed areas will be allowed to develop at least
• one full year prior to livestock grazing activity. In order to ensure the
appropriate level of forage utilization, the management plan will include
flexible stocking rates and current livestock management practices. Also,
before grazing is initiated on the reclamation, the Division will be
notified.
As of 1989, Colorado Yampa Coal Company will begin livestock grazing at
Mine 3. The 310 acre area includes reclamation, native pastureland, brome
hay (dryland hay), hay cropland (irrigated hay), sage-meadow, and alkali '.
sagebrush. Based upon the available forage calculations presented in Minor
Revision 89-05, CYCC will be able to graze about 310 steers in this
particular area.
• MR 89-~5 2.05-95 Revised 08/10/89
