Impacts of Mining on Surface Water Quality
This paragraph is no longer applicable.
Surface coal mining will be conducted at Energy Mine No. 3 in Section
19, Township 5 North, Range 86 West. Topsoil materials were previously
salvaged from the proposed mine site and stockpiled, pending redistribution
in accordance with Rule 4.06.4. The only new disturbance of soils within
the proposed permit area will occur on the 5.3 acre tract west of the Middle
Creek Underground Mine highwall. Suitable plant growth media shall be
stripped to a depth of 18 inches and immediately redistributed on regraded
spoils.
The Middle Creek Underground Mine portal area was developed at the base
of a final cut in Section 12, Township 5 North, Range 86 West. Reclamation
of the portal pit and the highwall created by the surface mining operation
will involve backfilling the excavations with non-acid forming, non-toxic
forming spoils and regrading to approximate original contour. Backfilling
of the middle Creek Mine staging area is scheduled to begin in 1984.
All other disturbed areas that were previously mined have been regraded
to approximate original contour, topsoiled and seeded. The present posture
of the mining and reclamation operations must be kept in mind when
evaluating hydrologic impact and mitigation measures.
_'/ ./
• PRA
2.05-]37 Revised_3/14/89
~'
