1.D INTRODUCTION
• 1.1 Description of the Area
The current operations of the Seneca II-W mine are located mainly in secs.
15, 21, 22, and 23, T.5N., R.88W. in Routt County, Colorado. The subject of
this investigation is that part of the future mine operation that requires a
haul road and sedimentation pond in 005 Gulch in the NE 1/4, sec. 15. The
upper part of the gulch extends from the north-central part of sec. 15 where
elevations are about 7300 feet, northwestward to Dry Creek where the confluence
of it and 005 Gulch is at an elevation of about 6680 feet in the SW 1/4, NE
1/4, sec. 9.
1.2 Purpose and Scope
The work described in this report was undertaken to determine the extent
of existing landslides, and unstable and potentially unstable ground in 005
Gulch with particular reference to proposed Haul Road G, and to Sedimentation
Pond 005. The main purpose of this investigation was to define areas of
instability, to make appropriate recommendations for drill-hole testing, and to
provide geologic inputs to Peabody Coal Company for its design efforts.
The scope of the work included office geologic evaluation of aerial
photography (photogeology), field confirmation of photogeologic mapping,
additional mapping in the field, and conferring with personnel of Peabody Coal
Company, and with its soils engineering subcontractor, Ground Engineering
Consultants, Inc.
In addition to the detailed geologic work in 005 Gulch, the regional
geology particularly to the north, west, and south of the gulch was reviewed.
The regional area mapped included parts of secs. 9, 10, 15, and 16, T.5N.,
R.88W. Detailed geology of 005 Gulch was mapped in the east-central part of
• sec. 9, SW 1/4, sec. 10, and NW I/4, sec. 15.
1
