2.0 SUMMARY
This investigation was undertaken to determine the conditions of ground i
stability as they relate to the proposed Sedimentation Pond 005 and the
proposed Haul Road G for a future development of part of the Seneca II-W coal
mine. The sedimentation pond and haul road are proposed in what is ~•eferred to
as 005 Gulch in the northwestern part of Peabody Coal Company's permit area.
The project included an initial photogeologic evaluation of a regional
area that covers all or parts of secs. 9, 10, 15, and 16, T.5N., R.8~4W. Amore
detailed evaluation was made of the 005 Gulch extending from the north-central
part of sec. 15, to the north-central part of sec. 9 where it flows into Dry
Creek.
Several sites were considered for the sedimentation pond. The site
finally chosen is in the lower part of 005 Gulch about 3900 feet from the
origin of the proposed haul road and about 4150 feet from the proposed mine
mouth. This site will be developed in alluvial and alluvial fan deposits.
Although the site is a greater distance from the mine than would normally be
preferred it is in stable materials in a geologically sound location.
The haul road extends for slightly over 8000 feet from Routt County Road
No. 53 at an elevation of about 6680 feet to an elevation of about 7300 feet a
short distance from what will be the pit mouth. Most of the haul road
alignment is in stable geologic materials; however, a section of about 1000
feet is in unstable ground. A major part of the solution to this condition
will be the design of a drainage system that will allow water to move rapidly
from the roadway into the natural drainage.
•
4
