Colorado 80203
Reference: Cresson Project; Permit M-80-244: Your Inquiry About Total Sulfur Analyses.
Dear Mr. Keffelew:
During your inspection with other members of the Office of Mined Land Reclamation Staff, it
was requested, and the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company ("CC&V") agreed, that
CC&V would provide to your office the results of total sulfur analyses performed on the
uneconomic low-grade ore and overburden that has been removed from the Cresson Mine and
placed in various overburden storage areas. This letter provides the information that completes
that agreed-upon submission.
CC&V performs total sulfur analyses on essentially every blast drill hole in rock containing less
than the cutoff grade of gold. In the period starting with the beginning of Cresson mining
through September 27, 1996, CC&V conducted about 31,775 measurements (which includes
some duplicates) of total sulfur of overburden material.
Of these analyses, 5,832 represent material placed in the Ironclad Mine. This material is placed
on the Ironclad (or, later, the Globe Hill) Mine if it exceeds the total sulfur cutoff of 0.8
percent. The 5,832 measurements characterize 3,903,340 tons of low-grade and overburden
material. The tonnage includes material with less than 0.8 percent total sulfur that has been
included in a minable block. Therefore, some total sulfur analyses of material placed in the
Ironclad Mine will be less than the cutoff percentage. The range of total sulfur levels in these
5,832 samples is from 0.0052 to 4.6152 percent (weight). The arithmetic average is 0.7993
percent total sulfur. •
The material placed in locations other than the Ironclad Mine is currently characterized with
25,932 samples. These 25,932 samples apply to 18,709,957 tons of material. The range in total
