<br />ITEC Environmental Colorado, Inc. <br />Ms. Maxine Stewart <br />~] <br />March 26, 1999 <br />Page 2 <br />(typically 6 inches), the depth ofwater in the wells (typically in excess of30 feet), and the slow recharge rate <br />ofthe wells, the standazd practice of purging three casing volumes of water prior to sampling was omitted. <br />Five bailer volumes (approximately 5 liters) were removed from each well to ensure adequate sample volume. <br />Watercollected from each well was placed in a temporary container that had been cleaned with a dilute nitric <br />acid solution and rinsed with water from the sample collection location. Sample aliquots were pumped from <br />the temporary collection container into appropriate laboratory-supplied containers using a peristaltic pump <br />and silicon tubing. All ofthesampleswerefieldfilteredfordissolvedanalysesbypumpingthesamplealiquots <br />through a 0.45 µ in-line disposable filter. The filter was purged with approximately 200 mL of sample water <br />before the laboratorycontainerwasfilled. Filters and tubing were usedforonlyonesampleandsubsequently <br />disposed. <br />The groundwater samples from the Hazel A adit and the Wynona were col lected by compositing five <br />1-liter grab samples into a collection container in a mannor similar to that described below for surface water <br />sample collection. <br />Indicator water quality parameters, including pH, temperature and specific conductance were <br />monitored for all samples, as well as other pertinent data such as observed color and any noticeable <br />sedimentation. These field parameters were recorded on Groundwater Sampling Record forms. The field <br />parameters for each well are summarized in Table 1. Immediately after sample collection, laboratory <br />containers were sealed, labeled and placed in anice-cooled, insulated chest for storage, pending delivery to <br />the laboratory. Chain-of-custody forms were also completed and signed by the field personnel and placed <br />inside the ice chest. <br />In addition to collection of six compliance monitoring groundwater samples, one field quality <br />assurance/quality control (QA/QC) sample was collected for laboratory analysis. Duplicate sample identified <br />as Well #2B was collected at the same location and at the same time as the monitoring sample for Well #2 <br />(Well #2A), and labeled appropriately for separate analyses. This duplicate aliquot was collected by <br />alternately filling quarter-bottle increments to ensure uniformity ofthe monitoring sample and the duplicate. <br />FIRST-QUARTER SURFACE WATER SAMPLING <br />In addition to the groundwater samples collected from the monitoring wells, Wynona mine and the <br />Hazel A adit, as discussed above, two surface water samples were also collected as part of the quarterly <br />compliance monitoring at the Site. One surface water sample was taken from Left Hand Creek, collected <br />just downstream of Lick Skillet Road and the other surface water sample was taken from the Gold Hill Mill <br />Tailings Pond. The sampling methodology for these samples was essentially the same as for the well samples, <br />with the exception that a 1-liter HDPE wide-mouth sample bottle was used instead of well bailers as the <br />collection device. A total of five 1-liter grab samples were collected from the surface water sampling <br />locations and composited in the temporary collection container (churn-sputter). Aliquots were then drawn <br />for analysis as described above for the groundwater samples. As with the other non-dedicated sampling <br />equipment, the l-liter sampling bottle and the temporary collection container were cleaned with a dilute nitric <br />acid solution and rinsed with water from the sample collection location priorto use at each sampling location. <br />):15461 \ I Q7R99.L7R.wpd <br />
