concurrent with the regular planting season.
~~
LI
Seeding will be accomplished by drill seeding,, broadcast seeding, or hydroseeding Drill
seeding is, the preferred method and will be employed on the majority 'of reclaimed areas.' A
rangeland type drill equipped with two seed boxes will be used~for all drill seeding..TFiis type
of drill is capable of handling the rough and trashy surface conditions common in retopsoiled
areas and can be operated on relatively steep terrain. This type of drill is also adapted to
seeding complex range mixtures because of the availability of two seed boxes; the legume
box, and the large seed. box. The seed mixes will be split into large and small' seed
components with the small seed placed in the legume box and the large seed placed in the
remaining box. The drop tubes 'from the small seed box are arranged to broadcast the small
seed on the-ground with light soil coverage accomplished by the drill action and drag chains.
' Seed in the large box, requiring deeper seeding, will drop into a furrow created by the contour
disks and then will be covered by the drag chains. All drill seeding operations will be done on
the contour unless steep slopes restrict operations to up and down the slope for safety
reasons.
Broadcast seeding will be carried .out in areas ~ where drill seeding operations would 'be
. restricted, including steep slopes that are to be temporarily reclaimed. A roughened seedbed
will be developed on temporarily reclaimed steep slopes which are tobe broadcast seeded.
These methods may include dozer tracking or development of roughened surface conditions
during construction activities.. Hydromulchirig broadcast seeded areas or hydroseeding
combined with hydromulching will be used as optional methods or on difficult sites.
Hydroseeding and 'hydromulching are detailed below., Broadcast seeding will also be used in
coricentrated shrub seeding areas. ~A Cyclone type seeder will be used for broadcast seeding
operations: Broadcast seeding rates; where not specifically noted, will be .double the drill
seeding rates. ~ .
Hydroseeding, followed by hydromulching, will be used on permanently reclaimed steep slopes
where normal drill seeding operations are not feasible. The surface to be hydroseeded should
be in as roughened a condition as possible. The hydroseeding rate will be 1.5 to 2 times the
drill seeding rate for the permanent seed mix used. Hydroseeding will be completed~as one
separate pass followed by a second pass to apply mulch ahd tackifier. Immediately after
' completion of ,hydroseeding, the area will be hydromulched with 3,000 pounds per acre of
virgin wood fibre mulch and 70 pounds per acre of an organic tacking agent. The tacking
agent should be guava based and water insoluble. upon drying. If ~guara is not available, it may
be necessary to substitute psyllium based material at 100 pounds per acre. Fertilizer, at 'an
.. approximate rate of 200 pounds per acre of 18-46-0, will _
29 ~ ~ Revised 7/99
