adherence to..the label. A herbicide application program is currently in-place at Peabody's~ <br /> Seneca II Mine and will form the basis for a program at'Seneca II-W. <br />Seed Mixes and Planting Lists Four seed mixes have been developed for permanent <br />revegetation of the 11-W and II-W South permit areas and the Tie-Across Haul Road. ~ In <br />addition; a mix of small grains for use as a cover crop and a mix of native shrubs species to be <br />sown alone to generate shrub islands have been developed . Alsd included here are lists of <br />tree and shrub species to be used in direct nursery stock planting areas again intended to <br />establish shrub islands. ~ ~ ~ ~ _ <br />Initial considerations in the development of the permanent mixes and seedling (nursery stock) <br />lists included the anticipated reclaimed area site conditions and the desired revegetation <br />communities. Specific goals which factored into the permanent seed mixes and seedling lists <br />included rapid and long-term surface stabilization, ease of establishment, maximum use of <br />native species, adequate species.diversity, high levels of utility for livestock and wildlife, good <br />forage production potential, compatibility with naturally regenerating native species present in <br />replaced topsoil, and the ability to be self-sustaining or compliment successional processes in <br />the reclaimed plant communities. 'Attainment of these goals, in turn, facilitates achievement <br />of the postmining land uses. <br />To finalize the plant materials lists, dominant or commonly occurring species identified in the <br />Seneca~ll-W and .II-W South Extension area vegetation baseline studies were evaluated for <br />inclusion in the seed mixes or planting lists. The list of these species was further refined to <br />include. the more desireable .li,e., no noxious or strong increaser species) or high utility <br />species. Realistic and consistent market availability was a strong selection criterion for all <br />potential species and varieties. Included species .which were not present in vegetation <br />baseline studies were added to aid in achievement of the revegetation goals specified earlier. '. <br />Finally, analysis of revegetation monitoring data collected a[ the Seneca II Mine since 1 985 <br />and review of pertinent revegetation literature was performed. The resulting information <br />provided .insights into seeded species performance, seeding rates, stand composition, planting <br />rates and survival percentages, and the degree to which natural regeneration compliments the <br />seed mixes. <br />Seed Mix No. 1 ITable~22-11.has been designed for all reclaimed upland sites and ephemeral <br />drainages on the mine area. It~ will be used for upland areas on the tie-across haul road.
