Thlaspi arvensis -field pennycress
These species are neither omnnnn nor widespread on the study area as
evidenced by the fact that none appeared in the 242 cover and production
quadrats sampled during the vegetation study (Anperuiix B). Canada thistle
was occasionally found to be gracing near wet areas (drainages, ponds)
while field peru~ycress and quackgrass were encountered occasionally on
other disturbed sites.
SELENIIF~7 II4DICATOR PIANPS
Only one primary selenium obligate or indicator plant (i.e., requires
selenium for proper growth and is found only where there is selenium in
the soil) was encountered during vegetation investigations at Seneca II
Mine
1. Aster xylorrhiza - oomnon woodyaster
Secondary selenium absorbers are not limited to soils containing selenium
but nay accumzlate selenium when gro,~cing in seleniferous soils, ha:~ver,
all other conditions equal, they grow just as well on soils oontairing
no selenium. Secondary selenium absort~ss encountered during vegeation
studies at Seneca II were:
1. Aster spp. - aster
2. Castilleja spp. - paintbrush
3.
