• INTRODUCTION
Lorencito Coal Company LLC contracted with Greystone Environmental Consultants to conduct an
intensive cultural resource inventory for an amended mine permit application. This report is an
Addendum to the reportofJune 2001 (Spath and Walth 2001). The cultural resource im~entory for this
Addendum report consists of areas not surveyed in the above inventory or in the inventory in 1996 by
MetcalfArchaeologicalConsultants, Inc. (McKibbin et al 1997). This survey includes the valley floor
of Lorencito Canyon, an area along the south side of Picketwire Valley, and in the lower portions of
Little JeffCanyon (Figure 1). Figure 1 shows the entire valley bottom areas but the total acreage, for
this survey, is the area shown less the fill and pond areas surveyed earlier this year for a total of 100
acres. Conditions were excellent for the discovery of cultural resources.
In addition to the pedestrian survey, test excavations were completed for site SLA9562 and SLA9570.
The testing consisted of shovel test pits to determine the presence of intact cultural deposits to aid in
eligibilitydeterminationfortheRegister. The surveyandtestingwerecompletedAugust8-10,2001 by
Carl Spath, Cherie Walth, and Michael Landem.
This report is an addendum to the Spath and Walth (2001) report and does not repeat the
environmental and culture history information that can be found in that report. This report describes the
• objectives, methods, and results for the new survey areas and testing only. "The pedestrian survey
resulted in the recording ofthree new isolated finds, all prehistoric artifacts. One previously recorded
site, SLA7194, was re-evaluated. The site boundaries were expanded due to the additional artifacts
observed. This site is recommended as eligible for the Register because ofthe diversity ofthe artifact
assemblage; presence ofdiagnostic artifacts (projectile points and ceramic artifacts), and the likelihood
of buried cultural deposits (from the original recording). Two other previously recorded sites,
5LA9571 and 5LA9572, were re-visited and were observed to have lithic artifacts. These two sites
were originally recorded as possible eagle trap sites. Re-evaluation forms were completed for these
sites to reflect the presence of the chipped stone artifacts but remain unevaluated for eligibil ity for the
Register until the Native American consultation process is completed. The two sites that were shovel
tested did not reveal intact buried cultural deposits and aze recommended as not eligible to the Register.
Cultural resource clearance is recommended with the stipulation that the unevaluated and eligible sites
be avoided.
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
In accordance with the regulatory requirements of a Memorandum of Understanding between the
Mined Land Reclamation Board and the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation,
this project area was inventoried to identify any cultural resources within the APE of the proposed
project. Any discovered cultural resources were to be evaluatedforeligibilitytotheNationalRegister
•
LorencitoS V YandTestingCulRpt-RPT(475)Aug0l.wpd
