Stewart
RE: GOLD HILL MILL -Gold Hill, CO
THIRD-QUARTER 1998
COMPLIANCE SURFACE & GROUND WATER MONITORING
Dear Ms. Stewart:
November 10, 1998
This letter report documents the field activities conducted by McCulley, Frick & Gilman, Inc.
(MFG) in connection with the third-quarter groundwater monitoring at the Gold Hill Mill project site (Site)
near Gold Hill, Colorado. These monitoring activities are in fulfillment of requirements for quanerly
compliance monitoring of groundwater and surface water at the Gold Hill Mill, as required by the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology. Monitoring activities were performed in accordance with MFG
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS), adapted as necessary to accommodate as-encountered field
conditions.
THIRD-QUARTER GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Groundwater sampling activities were conducted at the Site by MFG personnel on September 30,
1998. Groundwater samples were collected from four monitoring wells (Well I/1, Well 112, Well 113, and
Well 114). Additional groundwater samples were taken from the Hazel A adit and the fresh water holding
tank located inside the mill building. The fresh water holding tank is fed by groundwater pumped from the
Wynona mine and therefore represents the Wynona groundwater sample. Respective sampling locations
are shown on Figure 1.
Initial water levels for each well were measured to the nearest 0.01 foot from the top of [he well
casing (TOC) using a Solinst electronic water level meter, prior [o commencing the sampling procedures.
The water level probe was decontaminated, at the beginning of [he sampling event and prior to sampling
each subsequent monitoring well, by washing [he probe with anon-phosphate detergent and distilled water
solution and rinsing twice with distilled water. Water level data obtained during the third-quarter is
presented in Table 1, attached.
After measuring the water level in each well, the respective wells were sampled by lowering a
dedicated polyethylene bailer, suspended by nylon rope, into [he well. Due to [he large casing diameters
(typically 6 inches), the depth of water in [he wells (typically in excess of 30 feet), and the slow recharge
rate of the wells, the standard practice of purging three casing volumes of water prior to sampling was
I IIIIIII III • 4900 Pearl Easi Circle
II I I I I II Boulder, Colorado 803001
999
303/d47-1823
Fax'447-1836
c~
Albuquerque.
