• oats to be planted will vazy according to those varieties available in a given year. The oat <br />seed will germinate rapidly to form an effective temporary cover as well as a natural mulch <br />for later permanent seeding operations. The cover crop seed will be utilized on disturbed <br />azea when it is determined that planting the permanent seed mixture is less beneficial due to <br />the specific season and/or poor growing conditions die to extended drought. <br />The proposed seed mixtures include introduced species that have been included in the seed <br />mixtures due to their proven effectiveness in establishing and adapting under conditions <br />similar to those at the Southfield site. Introduced species included in the seed mixtures <br />include the following: <br />• Oats (cover crop) <br />• Cicer milkvetch (permanent seed mixture) <br />The introduced species have been utilized extensively and have proven their value in <br />revegetation of disturbed areas in the west. Oats were selected as a temporary cover crop due <br />to their ease of establishment, rapid growth, soil holding capabilities and forage value. Cicer <br />milkvetch was added to the reclamation seed mixture at the Division's request. Inclusion of <br />Cicer milkvetch in the seed mixture is based upon its known nitrogen fixing capabilities, <br />longevity, and palatability as a browse specie. <br />In order to assure that seed materials are of suitable quality, EFCI will attempt to obtain these <br />materials from sources most closely approximating site conditions, and will deal only with <br />reputable established seed suppliers. Prior to seeding, seeding specifications will be <br />reviewed to ensure that all seed meets acceptable standards for purity and guaranteed <br />germination rates. <br />Seeding Methods. EFCI will generally use on of two seeding methods dependent upon the <br />nature and aspect of the area to be reclaimed. Drill seeding with a conventional rangeland <br />seed drill with be utilized for most reclamation work. Drill seeding rates, in PIS/acre, are <br />shown for the individual seed mixtures on Tables 33 and 33a. To the extent possible, EFCI <br />will drill seed along the contour in order to establish lineaz contour line features which help <br />break-up sheet runoff and minimize the potential for rill and gully erosion. <br />In azeas where drill seeding is not practical due to the limited size of the disturbance area or <br />slope gradients that would limit normal equipment operation, hydroseeding or broadcast <br />. seeding will be utilized.
