The first
test results were sent to you on July 17 with a memo notifying you
of the failure. As was the case with the first failure, the
Ceriodaphnia test failed (6 out of 20 survivors with 100% effluent)
while the Daphnia test passed (18 out of 20 survivors with 100%
effluent).
As was recommended by your Division, a Salinity Toxicity
Relationship (STR) test was run on a sample taken from this pond.
This report, also enclosed, indicates that salinity was indeed the
cause of the Ceriodaphnia failures. This STR test completes the
Partial Toxicity Investigation (PTI) that we committed to in a
second memo dated July 17, 1998 (actually written on July 23.)
In regards to the sediment spill at Point 005, which was reported
to you on August 3, all of that sediment was cleaned out of the
discharge channel on August 4. The clean out of this pond is still
in progress and will hopefully be complete by the end of this
month. Please call me at 970-276-5109, or e-mail me at
djones@peabodygroup.com, if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~~~~/e~
Dennis Jone/s
Hydrologist I
cc: Mike Boulay (CDMG)
Seneca Coal Company P.O.
