Carla Lenkey
RE: WET Teat Failure at Discharge PoiIIt 005, Permit No. CO-0000221
Dear Ms. Lenkey,
Per our conversation on July 14, this letter serves to notify the
CDOH of the above referenced WET test failure. The attached report
for the Ceriodaphnia dubia shows a LC50 of 95.5% (9 out of 20
survivors with 100% effluent). Due to the high conductivity
observed during sampling (4500 umho/cm), a second test using
Daphnia magna was also performed. That test had a LC50 of >100%
(19 out of 20 survivors with 100% effluent).
The cause of the failure is likely due to the fact that this
sediment pond has been partially filled with mine spoils during
this years spring runoff. This pond is scheduled to cleaned out
this summer. In the meantime, Seneca will undergo accelerated
testing (using both species) at this discharge point. A second
sample was collected on July 14. Please call me at 970-276-5109 if
you have any questions.
Sincerely,
~.Q-`--°~ C9-~~
Dennis Jo es
Hydrologist I
cc: Mike Boulay (CDMG)
Seneca Coal Company P.O.
