tree species contributed the remaining 4%. Major shrub species contributing <br />• most of the cover was gambel oak with relative cover of 65Y and Utah service- <br />berry with a relative cover of approximatey 19Y (Table 5). <br />Production Data - Production of the herbaceous understory in the pinon- <br />juniper reference area was very sparse with 40 pounds per acre of fortis being <br />produced. Of this, approximately 23 pounds were contributed by grasses while <br />15 pounds were contributed by forb species (Table 6). Annual species contrib- <br />uted 21 pounds per acre to the total production within the reference area. <br />Within the pinon-juniper affected area, production was somewhat higher <br /> <br />with approximately 80 pounds per acre of total forage being produced (Table <br />7). Of this, approximately 55 pounds per acre were produced by grasses while <br />forb species contributed 23 pounds per acre. Annual species, including cheat- <br />grass, groundsmoke, and montane pepperweed, produced approximately 70 pounds <br />• per acre of the total forage. <br />Production within the mixed shrub reference area was approximately 46 <br />pounds per acre (Table 8). Of this, approximately 34 pounds per acre were <br />forb species while 8 pounds per acre were grasses. Major species included <br />cheatgrass, showy goldeneye, and pseudostellaria. <br />Density Data - Shrub and Lree density within the pinon juniper reference <br />area was approximately 3,287 trees and shrubs per acre (Table 9). Of this, <br />approximateiy 3,189 were shrub species. t4ajor shrubs included gambel oak in <br />both a greater than 1 inch diameter class and less than 1 inch diameter class <br />with Utah serviceberry, mountain mahogany and an±elope bitterbrush. Of the <br />trees, approximately 50 trees per acre each of Utah juniper and pinon per acre <br />occurred in the reference area. Within the pinon-juniper affected area, <br />approximately 5,690 trees and shrubs occurred per acre. Of these, approxi- <br />mately 5,570 were shrub species while i20 were trees (Table 10). <br />-15- <br />
