tree species contributed the remaining 4%. Major shrub species contributing
• most of the cover was gambel oak with relative cover of 65Y and Utah service-
berry with a relative cover of approximatey 19Y (Table 5).
Production Data - Production of the herbaceous understory in the pinon-
juniper reference area was very sparse with 40 pounds per acre of fortis being
produced. Of this, approximately 23 pounds were contributed by grasses while
15 pounds were contributed by forb species (Table 6). Annual species contrib-
uted 21 pounds per acre to the total production within the reference area.
Within the pinon-juniper affected area, production was somewhat higher

with approximately 80 pounds per acre of total forage being produced (Table
7). Of this, approximately 55 pounds per acre were produced by grasses while
forb species contributed 23 pounds per acre. Annual species, including cheat-
grass, groundsmoke, and montane pepperweed, produced approximately 70 pounds
• per acre of the total forage.
Production within the mixed shrub reference area was approximately 46
pounds per acre (Table 8). Of this, approximately 34 pounds per acre were
forb species while 8 pounds per acre were grasses. Major species included
cheatgrass, showy goldeneye, and pseudostellaria.
Density Data - Shrub and Lree density within the pinon juniper reference
area was approximately 3,287 trees and shrubs per acre (Table 9). Of this,
approximateiy 3,189 were shrub species. t4ajor shrubs included gambel oak in
both a greater than 1 inch diameter class and less than 1 inch diameter class
with Utah serviceberry, mountain mahogany and an±elope bitterbrush. Of the
trees, approximately 50 trees per acre each of Utah juniper and pinon per acre
occurred in the reference area. Within the pinon-juniper affected area,
approximately 5,690 trees and shrubs occurred per acre. Of these, approxi-
mately 5,570 were shrub species while i20 were trees (Table 10).
-15-
