Elevation within the type at the mine ranges from 5800' to 8000'. Slopes <br />• range from 8 to 80 percent with aspect from southwest to southeast. <br />Mixed Shrub - The mixed shrub vegetation type occurs along the ecotone <br />between the pinon-juniper and oakbrush vegetation types. It is characterized <br />by a mixture of species from both types. At the OVM, this type occurs on the <br />north and northeast facing exposures west of Stevens Gulch extending from <br />approximately 5800' to 7200'. Dense stands of gambel oak interspersed with <br />Utah serviceberry and snowberry is typical. Utah juniper, squawapple and <br />antelope bitterbrush occur in scattered patches on the shallow soils. Dominant <br />herbaceous species include cheatgrass, broom snakeweed, etc. <br />Species <br />A total of 76 species were observed during the inventory. Of these, 10 <br />were grasses, 1 grasslike, 48 fortis, 1 succulent, 2 halfshrubs, 12 shrubs, and <br />2 trees (Table 2). <br />Weeds - A total of 13 species observed at the OVM are considered to be <br />weedy species in Colorado (Thornton et al., 1974). They include: <br />cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) <br />Cutleaf night shade (Solanum triflorum) <br />Field Bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) <br />Flannel mullein ('•Jerbascum thapsus) <br />Prairie pepperweed (Lepidium densiflorum) <br />Russian thistle (Salsola kali) <br />Salsify (Tragopogon dubius) <br />Tapertip onion (Allium acuminatum) <br />Thistle (Cirsium oerplexans) <br />• <br />-7- <br />
