University 'of Colorado Museum. Weedy species were determined using Thornton
• et al., 1974. The authority for scientific names came from Weber and Johnston,
1976. Common names are from Nickerson et al 1976.
Affected Area Sample Design
The proposed waste disposal site is the only area to be affected by
currently proposed mining activities.
Sample locations were chosen by gridding a map (scale: 1"=500') with N-S
•
•
and E-W lines, and randomly plotting points obtained from an HP25 calculator
random numbers generator program. Points were located in the field by pacing
from a known location. All points were generated before any samples were
taken.
Reference Area Locations
Current mining activities have disturbed acreage in both mixed shrub and
pinon-juniper vegetation types. Reference areas for these types have been
established and meet the following criteria: 1) are located in areas not to
be affected during the life of the mine; 2) are at least three acres or more
in size; 3) are of similar vegetation as areas currently affected or to be
affected in the future by OVM; 4) represent a diversity of slope, aspect and
soils similar to the veyetation types affected.
Reference Area Sample Design
The quantitative sampling designs for the reference areas follow the same
procedures as those for the affected area.
-2-
