I

760 feet at its maximum (Figures `4,06.8-3 and -4), Below the bridge, crossing
the Black Hawk Canyon in the southeast corner of the permit area, the Trinidad
Sandstone outcrops on the north side of the bank, Above this bridge and east
of the Aouse Road ttie ground is irregular and cluttered with rocks probably
from past mining of the Cameron Seam which must have Deen at shallow depths at
this location,
On the other side of the channel there are two circular subsidence pits
measuring about 8 feet deep and about 15 feet in diameter that break the
otherwise flat topography of the valley floor. On either side of the valley
the ridges rise at moderate slopes, The slopes are wooded with pinyon juniper
but little grass grows under the trees.
Vegetation cover on the valley floor consists of patches of buffalo
grass, weeds, which are dominantly redstem filaree, and scattered small
prickly pear cactus, A few bushes of pinyon juniper hang from the edges of
the steep channel banks,
The L•anks of the channel are vertical on the outside of the bends in the
channel and sloping on the inside, The banks are composed of unconsolidated
alluvial deposits consising of silt, clay, sand and some gravel, Two detailed
sections were measured along the canyon and are given below:
Section A: (North bank of Black Hawk Canyon, 250 feet upstream from
bridge in southeastern corner of permit area)
Thictciess (Ft,) Description
13.25 Clay, silty, light brown, uniform;
with interbeds of 3 inches thick dark
clay
2,25 Sand, silty, light-orange; some gravel
lenses
Bottom of channel
Section B: (North bank of Black Hawk Canyon, about 550 feet upstream
from the same bridge as above)
i
JFSA-67
'4~
~~ •- 353
7.
