SIMPSON, P.E. , ASSISTANT STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: RIO GRANDE COUNTY -DEL NORTE PIT: HIGHWAY #112 -
#78-71
We have reviewed the application for a gravel pit near Del Norte as re-
quested by your office . The applicant proposes to construct a gravel
pit in the immediate vicinity of the Rio Grande Canal and states that
the ground water level will be affected by the amount of annual pre-
cipitation. Research by our office, however, indicates that the water
has occurred in the gravel pit from seepage from the Rio Grande Canal
in recent years . The project could result in increased seepage from the
canal and therefore, result in potential injury to the owners of the canal
with regards to reduced flows. The effect of this increased seepage should
be analyzed and the mitigation of any injury presented with this ap-
plication prior to approval of the permit by the Board.
Hal D.
