Larcrtcifo Canvort Mine - Vegefmion Tcchniml ReDOrr
• Smith Whitlow-grass
Smith whitlow-grass plants are covered with minute and densely stellate hairs. They have
numerous, elongate, slender caudices. The flowers are white at the top of multiple stems. This
species occurs in rock crevices in the southern mountains from the upper Rio Grande Valley to
the Mesa de Maya.
Colorado Green Gentian
Colorado green gentian produces several branched flowering stems up to a foot tall. The plant
grows for several years as a vegetative rosette before flowering. It appazently dies after flowering.
Leaves and floral bracts have distinct white margins. Flowers are four-petaled, whitish or
greenish with purple dots and are about 3/4 inches across. This species is known from only a few
populations in Baca, Las Animas, Bent, and Prowers counties. The gentian grows primarily on
Greenhorn limestone outcrops, where it is associated with typical grassland plants and occasionally
with juniper.
Sandhill Goosefoot
Sandhill goosefoot has flowers in small clusters that do not become fleshy or red. The leaves are
• often mealy and pubescent. This species is rare or infrequent. It occurs on the southeastern
plains.
Special concern plant surveys were conducted along with the general vegetation mapping and data
collection. If suitable habitat was identified for the plants, asite-specific survey was conducted.
Any potential habitat was combed in a zig-zag pattern by two qualified biologists.
SECTION 4 -REFERENCES CITED
Carlson, LeRoy. 1996.
